A Summer’s day in a tiny flower…..

Autumn is really showing its’ beautiful glowing colours here on the hillside and already throwing some surprises into the meteorological mix. Yesterday afternoon was a busy one in the boutique and all my Sunday afternoon visitors were completely unprepared, after the mild morning, for the fierce downpour and hailstorm which turned up around 4.00pm and refused to leave until well after 5.00pm. I happened to be busy helping a particularly favourite couple with their choice of fabric for re-covering a sofa when the rain really got into full swing. (She wants modern, a bit more daring, he, bless him, couldn’t even imagine a daring thing in a month of Sundays – tricky shortage of options there…) Suddenly I was dancing my very best quickstep, arm and arm with a team of small buckets and various rolls of expensive fabric, to try and contain the trickles and flows falling from the ceiling and avoid too much damage to my precious stock.  Within an hour or two all had passed, the courtyard was once again dry and I was left thinking to myself that we seem to have been here several times already this year…

Today all was once again sushine and beauty and I noticed, not for the first time, how very wonderful and tenacious the solanum is at this time of year.  A delightful and enthusiastic climbing plant,  flowering from summer’s end through to late autumn , the solanum jasminoides, is related to many plants including the humble potato.   Our particular example is a vigourous fellow, despite numerous hard prunings  it has regularly suceeded in climbing up the courtyard wall and even over the verandah roof to tap on the window of the guest room above.   Despite its’ vigour, it is  to me most delicate and feminine in appearance, its’ tiny rich blue flowers and sunshine yellow heart  a frail and wonderful reminder of a summer’s day in miniature……………………………

  4. What an exquisite phrase, “a frail and wonderful reminder of a summer’s day in miniature.” I don’t think you could have chosen more perfect and suitable words to describe the beautiful blossom.
And what a visual–you spinning about in the shop, salvaging inventory with grace and aplomb. I’d bet there weren’t too many grumblers stuck inside though, as I imagine your magic kingdom can hold the attention of customers for a great deal longer than an autumn storm.
    Beautiful as ever, Jane!

    1. My thanks as always Shelley for your kind comments! Today the sun came back but the sky is full of cranes flying south, the good and the bad bits of autumn beautifully entwined! 🙂

All a bit cr..p here, weather, poorly cat, rain, damp, all that November dreariness…. even in sunny Charente! 😦 A bientôt and Bon courage for the assessments 🙂
